It seems as though every grade school in the country hosts a holiday program each December, and Litzsinger School is no exception. On paper, the school’s event sounds pretty conventional: adorable children dressed as reindeer and snowmen, singing about jingling bells and silent nights.

Yet anyone who has had the opportunity to experience Litzsinger’s annual winter program will tell you that it’s anything but typical. In fact, for some in the audience, the performances are nothing short of a miracle: Students who only months before had trouble speaking are now singing; children with limited mobility are using their wheelchairs for highly choreographed dance sequences.

It’s all part of the Litzsinger School approach to special education. Everyone is included, and abilities, not disabilities, are the focus of attention.

Located in Ladue, Missouri, Litzsinger School is one of five special education schools operated by Special School District of St. Louis County. The school educates children ages 5 to 14 years with a range of disabilities.

Litzsinger students receive services in classrooms specifically designed to meet their overall needs. Traditional classroom learning activities are often supplemented with services ranging from physical therapy and occupational therapy to speech and language services.
